Fabric Alphabet Letters

I love handmade gifts! When they’re simple and cute, of course 😉 I’m super excited to have one handmade gift checked off my list – these super cute Fabric Alphabet Letters! This is also a great simple sewing project idea for beginner sewers.

I have a tutorial for these simple Fabric Alphabet Letters to show you how to make them.  My nephew is just a few months old, the age where they don’t “need” anything, so I thought these letters would be fun and enjoyed for years to come.  His preschool sister I’m sure will love to sort letters, spell simple words, etc. This post may contain affiliate links.

Fabric Alphabet Letters

You’ll need:
5in Charm Pack (I used Toy Chest),
1 yard backer fabric

diy fabric alphabet letters

How to Make Fabric Letters:

Fabric Letters Pattern:

I printed out the alphabet in a chunky font and cut those letters out.  I have that FREE ALPHABET LETTERS file if you’d like to use the same letters. Enter your email address in the box down below to access the free file.

I used a fabric pen to trace around the letters onto each square in the charm pack.

Layering Fabric Letters:

Then I layered it on top of low-loft batting on top of a backing fabric.  I originally planned to have another of the charm pack on the back, but then I thought it might confuse the kiddos when the letters were flipped over.  This way they’ll know that the back is different from the front.

You want the backing and the batting slightly bigger than the charm pack piece.

Sewing Fabric Letters:

The trace line is the cutting line, so when I sewed, I sewed about 1/4 inside of the line.  I sewed with all the layers together.

Then after it’s all sewed, you’ll cut along the trace line.

Frayed Edges on Letters

I wanted that frayed edge look, so I threw them all in the wash.  After they came out, I ironed them back out and clipped any crazy threads.  You can see the difference ironing makes in the pic below:

And that’s all there is to it!  Enjoy playing with your new alphabet set!
