A typical dorm room is equipped with three basics: a bed, a desk, and a dresser. In the limited confines of what you’re allotted, finding extra storage space can be challenging. Factor in a roommate and things are bound to get even cozier. Whether you’re setting off for your first semester of college or you’re a seasoned vet who has done drop-offs for years, there’s a thing or two to learn when it comes to organizing and shopping for a dorm.
Back-to-school shopping can be overwhelming—never mind carving out space to store what you bought. So to help the college-bound and their families pinpoint the must-haves, we turned to organization experts for their take on dorm storage essentials, including helpful product suggestions.
Before leaving for school, think carefully about what will be needed and used, says Karin Socci, founder of The Serene Home, a professional organization service. “If the item is not something you use at home, such as dressy clothing, sporting goods, or books, it is unlikely you will need it at school.”
Instead of packing extra sets of towels and bedding, get into the practice of washing them on a regular basis and reusing the same set or two. And if you’re looking to buy a coffee maker or another small appliance (such as a hair dryer) see if your roommate wants to go in on one together, Socci suggests.

While the closet may be a prime source of storage in a dorm, it’s limited. One easy way to save space? Skip the bulky hangers. A certified professional organizer, Mackenzie Scott of Mission 2 Organize, recommends slim hangers—either felt or plastic will do—to maximize the capacity of the closet.
When hanging items, group longer pieces together and relegate shorter ones to the other end to create room for freestanding storage units or shelves. Scott recommends a plastic drawer system that can house everything from clothes to shoes.
Also, make sure to take advantage of all the vertical space available. For example, use the area above any hanging space in the closet for baskets to hold lightweight items such as socks or intimates, Scott recommends.
The Shopping List
Shop baskets:
• Honey-Can-Do Task-It Woven Basket in gray, set of two, $12 at Amazon and Walmart

Outside of the closet, the next best opportunity for storage is under the bed. While baskets and bins can easily slide in underneath, bed risers are a great way to add a few extra inches of clearance space. This dorm-room staple is available in a variety of sizes and can be made from wood, polypropylene, or carbon steel (a sturdier option if you’re looking for something taller). But their functionality doesn’t stop there.
“Many bed risers come with built-in power outlets, which can be a great opportunity to provide ease of access to an outlet from the bedside,” Scott says.

Living in a dorm usually means having to use a communal bathroom. “The best method for bathroom-sharing is to get a bath caddy, especially if your bath area is down the hall or not attached to your room,” Scott says. It will make it easy to tote essentials back and forth and give the items a dedicated home.
A caddy will make it easy to carry the essentials. A similar approach can be used for makeup by creating a basket or case that holds all your products so you can pull them out, use them, and put them away, Scott adds.

An organized desktop is essential for carving out a productive workspace, especially because the space will probably be getting a lot of use. Consider your work style and whether you do well with visual clutter, says another professional organizer, Tana Ching. If you’re okay with being surrounded by piles of textbooks and notepads, she recommends grouping materials by subject matter and clearly labeling them. If you prefer things to be out of sight, opt for a portable file box to keep your staples in line without having to clutter your desktop.
“Treat your desktop as prime real estate,” Socci says. The more cluttered your desk is, the harder it will be to find the things you need. “Create a folder for each class and others for various social activities, and become diligent about filing things electronically.” For example, paper syllabuses can be scanned and stored digitally on your laptop or computer.
Shop file holders: Ikea, Target, Wayfair
Last but not least, remember that you don’t have to take everything with you right away, Scott says: “Travel light for fall, and if you find you really need extra items, grab them during your first break home or buy them when you get to school.”

]]>If your home office lacks inspiration, organization or convenience, do something about it — like one of these cool home office ideas.
A relatively simple do-it-yourself project transforms your office from second-rate to top of the line.
Keep important but lesser used office materials on a high floating shelf centered above your home office desk. Because this is an unusual placement, make it a design accent by matching the color of the shelf to the desk.
To hang the shelf, you’ll need a tape measure, pencil, level, handheld electric drill, wall anchors (hollow ones for plaster, butterfly or toggle anchors for drywall), screwdriver, and the shelf, bracket and screws.
Paint your office walls to create a calming and non-distracting backdrop for your work. Gray is a great neutral. Because the paint is available in so many different shades — dark, light, beige-ish, brownish, blue-ish — it matches just about anything.
To do a top-notch painting job, you’ll need a cellulose sponge, dishwashing liquid, a 2 to 2 ½-inch paintbrush, roller and rolling pan, painter’s tape, a 2-inch angled brush, and, of course, paint.
While you’re thinking “painting,” spruce up your office by putting a couple of fresh coats on your chair. There are many different ways you can go about painting wood furniture. For starters, you will need a drop cloth to work on, furniture cleaner, sponge, sand paper and electric sander, rag or towel, medium-size paint brush, primer, paint and oil-based clear sealant.
Make a useful and interesting desk from two repurposed wood stools and some pieces of lumber. You’ll need the stools, paint, paintbrush, boards, screws, electric or traditional screwdriver, paintbrush and wood stain.
The width of the desktop should be about the same as the width of the stool. A little wider is fine. Depending upon the width, you may need two or three boards.
Make a wall organizer for mail or paperwork by repurposing an old shutter. In addition to the shutter, you’ll need wood putty, hot glue gun, sandpaper, electric drill, rag, latex paint, paintbrush, four ½-inch wood screws with decorative washers and a measuring tape.
Dry erase boards are useful around the office, but they’re decidedly unstylish. Make one that matches your room using molding, a dry erase board, paint and hot glue gun. Wall hangers are optional.

Keeping your garage organized requires proper planning on how to best use your space and maximize storage.

So, I am sharing with you some of these garage organization ideas to get all of the clutter under control. With a little planning and organizing, you can get a well-organized garage in no time.

With some bungee cords, you can create a ready-access cage where you can store all your sports balls quickly against the wall and kids can easily grab one at the bottom without unloading all the ones on top.
Make use of your overhead spaces to store your seasonal or frequently used stuff to keep them out of the way. It’s ideal to put a label or use stackable clear plastic bins to know what’s inside and keep them dust-free.
Give your lawn and gardening tools their place, out of the way, yet easy-to-access spot with these simple and inexpensive PVC organizers. Grab a PVC pipe and cut them into holders for your rakes, shovels, and tools.
This screwdriver rack will keep your tools in their place. This is such an easy and inexpensive project to make. You may use pieces of scrap wood and drill a few holes in it. Then, cut some brackets for mounting, and you now have a neat and sturdy tool organizer.

Collapsible workbenches are easy to make and require minimal supplies. Just fold it up after using it and you instantly have extra space. No need to move a workbench around the garage anymore!
Hanging jars under the shelves is the best storage solution for your garage. Just drill the lids under the shelves and screw your mason jars in. An easy and simple way to store your nails, screws, and bolt. Plus, it's a perfect opportunity to upcycle mason jars.
Putting labels is perhaps the most important part of an organization. You will easily know what's inside every container, tub, and bin without knocking down everything inside.
Label the containers with taped-on labels or dry erase markers for easy re-labeling. Your garage is so much better organized when everything has its own place and labels to go with it.
Use an empty wall space in your garage to hang a shoe organizer and place your spray paint cans in the pouches. This spray paint organizer allows you to see the color you need and grab it without unloading every other can on the drawer or shelf.

Selecting the right recycling bin for your office not only facilitates the waste disposal process but also supports your commitment to sustainability. Here’s more guidance to make the selection process easier:
Placement
The location of the recycling bin matters. It should be placed in a visible, easily accessible area, typically near paper-intensive places like copiers, printers, and the kitchen.
Labelling
Clear, well-defined labels will ensure that recycling efforts are successful. The labels should indicate what type of waste goes in each bin – paper, plastic, cans, etc. This reduces contamination and promotes efficient waste separation.
Eco-friendly Materials
Consider bins made from eco-friendly materials, reinforcing your commitment to the environment. You can find bins made from recycled plastic or sustainable materials like bamboo.
Design
Choose a bin design that complements the office decor and fits the available space. This will ensure that the bin doesn’t become an eyesore and encourages usage.
Employee Training
Educate employees on proper recycling habits. The right bin is just one part of a successful recycling program.
Here’s a checklist for selecting the best recycling bin:
By choosing the right recycling bin for your office, you’ll not only encourage your employees to practice better waste management but also contribute to a more sustainable world.
Instituting recycling in your workplace is important as waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment. More and more harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses are released from trash at landfill sites. Fortunately, greater attention is being paid to waste management; businesses that are proactive about a recycling program are seeing the benefits, such as decreasing disposal costs.
Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste and helps address high raw material prices, rising costs of waste treatment and disposal, and pressure to increase the sustainability of your operations.
Come up with a waste reduction plan, and implement a waste audit to determine what can be reduced, reused, or recycled.
Encouraging recycling in your small business can help your bottom line, as well as help our most important resource – our environment.

]]>As living spaces continue to shrink, maximizing small spaces has become a top priority for homeowners and renters alike. In cities where real estate is at a premium, the need for small space solutions has never been greater. Fortunately, with creativity and clever design tricks, it’s possible to turn even the tiniest of spaces into a functional and stylish home.
One of the biggest challenges regarding small spaces is making every inch count. It means finding ways to use vertical space, utilizing multi-functional furniture, and being smart about storage solutions. The right approach makes even the smallest studio apartment or tiny house feel spacious and inviting.
Maximizing small spaces doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style, either. In fact, designing a small space can be an opportunity to get creative and inject personality into your home. From light color choices to unique lighting solutions, there are endless ways to make a small space your own.
Small space solutions are essential whether you’re living in a tiny apartment, a tiny house, or just looking to make the most of a small room in your home. With some ingenuity and careful planning, you can create a beautiful and functional space that feels much larger than it is.
Living in a small apartment can be challenging, especially when making the most of the limited space available. However, you can transform your small space into a cozy, functional home with creativity and thoughtful planning. Below are some tips that will help you maximize space in your small apartment.
When maximizing small spaces, start by decluttering and organizing your belongings.
Remove redundant items and only keep the essentials. Use storage boxes, baskets, and shelves to keep things organized and easy to find. Consider investing in furniture with additional storage, such as a bed with drawers underneath or a coffee table with hidden storage.
One of the small space solutions that is effective is to use multi-functional furniture. Choose pieces that can be used in various ways, such as a sofa bed, a folding table, or a storage ottoman that can also be used as extra seating. It will help you save space and make the most of every square inch in your apartment.
When working with limited floor space, it’s essential to utilize vertical space. Install shelves or cabinets on the walls to store books, decorations, and other items. Hang pots and pans in the kitchen, or use a hanging shoe organizer to store cleaning supplies or toiletries in the bathroom. It will help free up space on the floor and make your apartment feel more spacious.
Using soft colors and mirrors is one of the small space solutions that can make your apartment feel bigger. Light colors reflect more light, making a room more open and airy. Mirrors also reflect light and create the illusion of more space. Hang a large mirror on the wall or add a mirrored wardrobe to make your bedroom more spacious.
Living in a small house is equally challenging to maximize small spaces. But there are some tricks you can apply to make every inch count.
Furniture with exposed legs not only looks stylish and modern, but it also creates an illusion of space by allowing light to pass through and creating an airy atmosphere. It is particularly true for furniture like sofas, chairs, and coffee tables, which can take up a lot of floor space. When these pieces are elevated with exposed legs, it makes the room look and feel more spacious.
In addition to providing an illusion of space, furniture with exposed legs can also be functional. For example, if you have a small living room with limited space for storage, using a sofa or a chair with exposed legs will allow you to see underneath and use the space for storing baskets or bins.

Maximizing small spaces with small furniture might be an excellent choice for your limited square footage. Opting for pieces designed to fit into tight quarters can free up valuable floor space and make your house feel more open.
Small space solutions come in all shapes and sizes. From compact sofas and chairs to clever storage solutions that utilize every inch of space, plenty of options are available to help you make the most of your living area.
One of the key benefits of small furniture is that it allows you to create more functional spaces. Instead of cramming an oversized sectional couch into a tiny living room, you could opt for a cozy loveseat and a couple of armchairs. It would create a more intimate seating area perfect for entertaining guests or relax with a good book.
One often overlooked area that can provide a lot of extra space is corners. You can turn these small spaces into functional and stylish places in your house.
One of the best small space solutions for corners is to install shelves. By adding shelving units, you can create a storage space for books, knick-knacks, and other items that would otherwise clutter up your living area. You can also use the shelves to display art or decorative items, giving your room a unique and personalized touch.
Another way to make the most of corners is to add a corner desk. It is an excellent solution if you work from home or need a dedicated space for your computer. Utilizing the corner allows you to create a functional workspace without taking up too much floor space.
A cluttered kitchen can be overwhelming, mainly if you have limited counter and storage space. Fortunately, plenty of small space solutions can help you make the most out of your kitchen storage. The kitchen trends for 2023 are all about creating innovative storage solutions.
Maximizing small spaces by utilizing the walls inside your kitchen might be the way to go. Installing shelves or hanging baskets can provide additional storage while saving valuable counter space. Consider using a pegboard to hang your pots and pans or a magnetic strip to keep your knives within reach.
Another great way to make the most of your kitchen storage is by using containers and organizers. Group similar items together in clear containers to save space and make it easier to find what you need. Use drawer dividers to keep utensils and cutlery organized, and install pill-out organizers in your cabinets to make the most of every inch.
A small bedroom means limited storage, cramped quarters, and a lack of room for your belongings. But fear not! You can transform your bedroom into a cozy, relaxing space with creativity and small space solutions.
Maximizing small spaces by investing in multi-functional furniture might be a wise investment. Opt for a bed with built-in storage, such as drawers underneath or shelves above the headboard. Consider a desk that can double as a nightstand.
Another great way to maximize space in a small bedroom is by using the space under your bed. Invest in under-bed storage containers or bags for linens or off-season clothes. It will free up valuable closet and dresser space.
When it comes to small bedrooms, less is often more. Avoid clutter and opt for a minimalist approach to decor. Stick to a neutral color palette and limit the number of decorative items in the room. It will create a clean, uncluttered look and make your small space feel larger.
Maximizing natural light in a small bedroom can make it feel more open and spacious. Keep window treatments minimal to allow for as much light as possible. If you don’t have access to natural light, consider investing in quality lighting fixtures to brighten up the room.
Living in a small space can significantly impact our mental well-being. The limited square footage can make us feel cramped and restricted, whether it’s a studio apartment or a tiny house. However, there are ways to combat these adverse effects by maximizing small spaces and finding small space solutions.
One of the psychological effects of living in a small space is feeling claustrophobic. The lack of space can make us feel like we have no room to breathe or move around. It can lead to increased stress and anxiety levels. However, we can make our small space more open and spacious by using creative storage solutions and minimizing clutter.
Another effect of small spaces is the feeling of being confined. We may feel like we have no privacy or personal space, leading to a sense of unease.
Nevertheless, we can make the most of our limited space while maintaining a sense of personal privacy by using furniture that doubles as storage, such as a bed with built-in drawers or a coffee table with hidden compartments.
Maximizing small spaces can also have positive effects on our mental health. When forced to live in a small space, we must be more intentional with our belongings and lifestyle choices. It can lead to a sense of simplicity and minimalism, generating increased feelings of contentment and satisfaction.
In conclusion, maximizing small spaces has never been more critical in our fast-paced and urbanized world. Whether living in a tiny apartment, a cozy house, or just trying to make the most of a small room, there are many innovative and stylish ways to optimize your surroundings.
From multifunctional furniture to clever storage solutions, the key to maximizing small spaces is to be creative, practical, and efficient.

Using a birdcage as a desk organizer? Who would've thought! The key to this DIY organizer is spray paint and wooden dowel rods! The best part is: this organizer is portable!
As much as we understand spring is a season of renewal, we tend to keep some old stuff from the past. If you don't want them displayed in your home, then this hidden storage should be on your cleaning checklist! Just glue together a couple of unused book spines, and you've got a secret hiding place.
Ladders aren't just for construction work anymore. They can now be used for organizing your stuff into a stylish and fashionable display. Just take this ladder display for example. Could you think of an easier way to declutter your space?

This has got to be my favorite on this cleaning checklist! I'm excited to welcome spring because I have this amazing pegboard wall organizer. Just by drilling some wooden dowels onto a chosen size of plywood, you'll have an organizer for all kinds of stuff! Truly an investment not just for spring, but for an entire year of organizing!
Spring is also the season to try new recipes. For delicious and mouth-watering meals, you need fresh herbs and spices stored in this lovely spice jar storage! Can you believe all it takes is twisting a couple of wires and drilling nails on the wall? A must-try DIY project!
As we welcome spring, thoughts, events, and memories must be organized too! Get a couple of cork boards and paint them any way you want. I suggest painting your custom cork board in such a way that it grabs your attention every day.
If you're like me who can't stand articles of clothing lying around the house, this scarf hanger is the first thing you should make this spring. It doesn't even take much time: simply use some pliers to shape a line of wire into a hanger. Use a stretch of leather for embellishment.

]]>However, creating enough space to live clutter free in your home is critical for your physical and mental wellbeing. As they say, a tidy home creates a tidy mind, which allows you to feel more relaxed and less tense in your place of rest.
Struggling to know where to turn? Below, we’ll take a look at some of the top ways to improve storage space in your home.
Multi-purpose furniture is one of the best options when you’re dealing with a smaller home. Not only is multi-purpose furniture easy to find at places like Ikea or Wayfair at affordable prices, it’s also incredibly versatile and will last you for a number of years.
One fine example of multi-purpose furniture is the Divan bed. If you need an extra bedroom or a guest room but also work from home, why not double up your home office as a spare bedroom with a Divan bed. It could look like an elegant bookcase by day and the perfect backdrop for your zoom calls, then a comfy abode by nightfall and the perfect place for guests.
Other multi-purpose furniture includes day beds, foot stools that lift for extra storage, lift up beds with storage space underneath, a coffee table that extends into a desk, an armchair/ bed, or a coffee table that extends into a dining table. The possibilities are endless.
While extending your home can be a costly and time-consuming option, there are ways to add extra space without having to spend much of your budget. A garage kit is a great option for if you have the outdoor space to dedicate and the containers themselves are inexpensive and easy to install.
Whether you’re looking for space to store your cars, somewhere to host the in-laws, or just a man cave where you can work out or host your tool collection, there are a variety of garage kits to choose from to suit your needs.
Sometimes you just have to rip the band aid off and decide when enough stuff is enough. In our consumer society, it is so easy to keep collecting things, however by living more minimally, you will not only save money and be less stressed but also be helping the environment.
A great way to de-clutter is to set aside anything that you haven’t used in the last 3 months. If you still haven’t used it in another 3 then it’s time to take it to Goodwill.
Many storage spaces in your home like a pantry or closet are often not designed in a way that optimizes storage. In order to optimize the space, try redesigning the shelving to better suit your needs. Places like Ikea offer excellent closet storage systems that can be tailored to your space and storage needs.
If you’re still struggling for storage ideas or organization inspiration, look for ideas on the likes of Pinterest. You never know, you could come across a solution you’ve been needing to discover. You could also take a walk around a local Ikea store to see how they’ve designed some of the rooms with small spaces in mind.
Overall, having an organized home is critical for your physical and mental wellbeing. Follow the above tips to get started and you’ll be an expert organizer in no time.

]]>See this bag?
It hangs over the back of my chair in the office.
Truth?
You never know where life is going to take you. A trip to the library. A walk around the lake. A coffee date that turns into a work date. A last-minute shopping trip.
And the amazing thing about this bag? It’s always ready for an adventure. It’s ready to go at a moment’s notice.
I’m always on the go and along the way I had to learn to be prepared.
So I filled this bag (and the bag before this bag and the bag before that) with my on-the-go essentials.
You know.
The kind of things that you didn’t know you needed until they weren’t there and then you wish that you had them.
Want to see what’s inside?
Here are 17 things I always take with me in this bag.
I had to start with this portable laptop stand.
It goes with me everywhere. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love it. It folds flat and fits perfectly in the bag without taking up too much space. It puts your laptop at the perfect height for ZOOM calls. The stand allows your wrists to be at the perfect height when you are typing. I’ve used it at coffee shops and restaurants and my office and so many other places.
You can see the laptop stand here.
When I’m working or going for a walk my hair gets in my way. I also use them if I’m having a bad hair day and need to look cute for a ZOOM or lunch with a friend.
I found gold clips like these a couple of years ago and I love them.
My favorite one is the rectangle one at the top. It goes with me everywhere.
You can see the hair clips here.
A friend recommended this light and it’s kind of a game-changer.
You can clip it on your phone when you’re face-timing or on a ZOOM call.
You can clip the light on your laptop too. It’s so good and lights up your face and there are three different settings depending on the light around you. There are so many versions of this and I’ve tried several this clip on light is the best.
You can see the clip on video light here.
I wish I could tell you I was squared away enough to keep everything charged.
But I don’t.
Not even close. I keep a laptop charger in my bag (I have another one at my desk, too) along with a cord organizer to prevent tangled cables. This way, I can charge my laptop whenever I need to. I LOVE this collapsable charger organizer that attaches to the charger. All you have to do is pull it out and you can wind the charger cord around it to keep it organized in the bag.
You can see the collapsable charger organizer here.
When I was growing up we weren’t allowed to chew gum.
My mother was NOT about it (and still isn’t about it now).
So I never really got in the gum-chewing habit and mints taste too much like candy. So what’s a person who wants fresh breath to do? I found these Listerine strips. You just put one on your tongue and it melts and leaves behind fresh breath.
You can see the Listerine strips here.
You can thank me later for this one.
This No. 7 hand lotion is amazing. It’s not greasy, but not too creamy. It’s kind of thick and glides over the skin and adds a layer of protection. I always use it before a photo shoot so my hands look smooth and hydrated.
And it’s small enough to fit perfectly in the bag.
You can see the hand lotion here.
I use this portable charger all the time.
It’s so fast at charging my phone and it’s perfect for when you aren’t near an outlet—especially if you work in coffee shops all the time like me. I like this one because it lasts so long and it has multiple USB ports on either side. You can tell how much charge is left in the little window at the top.
You can see the portable charger here.
I am old school.
In a world of screens, I use a pen and paper. Having a small notebook like these in your bag can be incredibly useful for jotting down important notes, ideas, or to-do lists.
Having a dedicated space like this for putting down whatever I’m thinking helps me stay organized and I never forget anything.
You can see the notebooks here.
If I have a notebook, I have to have a pen.
And these are my favorite.
They glide and don’t leak (which is super important when you keep them in your bag).
You can see my favorite pens here.
I am a spiller with extra spills on top.
This Tide Pen is an amazing stain remover that gets rid of fresh stains on clothing or fabrics. I have one of these in my laundry room, my upstairs closet and my bag.
You can see the Tide Pen here.
Watching out for germs is more important than ever.
Carry a travel-sized hand sanitizer in your bag to keep germs at bay. This hand sanitizer spray from the Honest Company is made with aloe and other botanical extracts to prevent your skin from drying out. It has plant-derived ingredients and it isn’t sticky.
You can see the hand sanitizer here.
One thing you might forget about for your bag?
A mini pack of tissues. Whether it’s for wiping your hands, cleaning surfaces, or dealing with unexpected sneezes, tissues can come to the rescue. Choose a compact and easily resealable pack to keep them clean and easily accessible.
You can see the mini tissues here.
The best thing about this brush?
It folds up in half and is so compact that it’s easy to tuck into the pocket of your bag. It has a mirror on one side, but I like a compact mirror instead (see number 14 instead).
You can see the folding brush here.
Isn’t this the cutest compact mirror?
You never know when you’re going to need to fix something or put on lipstick or check to see if there’s anything in your teeth.
You can see the lighted compact mirror here.
I’ve been using these super affordable earbuds for four months now and I’m HOOKED. They don’t fall out. They have extra cushioning for the ear and they fit perfectly and the earbuds have different levels of sound depending on how much volume you need and they come in tons of colors. I’m never ever ever using another earbud. I have them in my bag and use them all the time to listen to audio books and music when I’m in a coffee shop.
And in amazing news? I have a 15% off code THISTLEWOOD.
You can see the headphones here.
Lint and pet hair on clothes can be so frustrating. A small lint roller like this can quickly remove fuzz from your clothes.
A roller like this will easily fit in your bag, but make sure you get one with a cover so you don’t waste so many of the peel-off strips.
And of course, it wouldn’t be a bag without red lipstick.
I have about seven of these red lipsticks that I keep everywhere including one in my bag.
My go-to red is Loreal British Red.
If I’m having a tough day? Nothing makes it brighter than a little red lipstick.
You can see my favorite red lipstick here.
And now you know what’s in the bag.
It’s packed and ready to go at a moment’s notice.
Just in case there’s an adventure waiting.

"No in Brooklyn they are not naked" |
by EMILY FABER | The National Desk
[TAG2] |
It's reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland's "Drink Me," but those who accept the invitation won't suddenly shrink in size or wind up down the rabbit hole. If a psychedelic-tinged escapade is what someone's after, a wealth of kaleidoscopic venues in Brooklyn will deliver precisely that, but behind this particular door is a scene arguably more surprising than oversized mushrooms and grinning Cheshire cats.
The door is a portal to a neighbor’s down-home barn in a small Southern town, emptied of last year’s hay by springtime and instead abuzz with the driving, foot-stomping rhythm of a carefree fiddle and the whirl of full-skirted dresses. Or it’s a means of time travel to postwar New York City in the late 1940s, albeit an alternate version of the decade with Converse’s future-forward Run Star Motion silhouette and a COVID-19 vaccine requirement.
In actuality, this is the site of Brooklyn Contra’s twice-monthly dances. Folk dancing, often associated with rural environments, provides an alternative to the usual nightlife scene in cities. (Video: Emily Faber, The National Desk)
Going out dancing in New York City usually carries a different connotation.
Behind the arched door with the intriguing sign is a well-lit gymnasium, sunshine streaming in through large windows and fluorescent lights overhead. There doesn’t seem to be a particular age group attracted to this activity, nor is there any real consistency in attire. And for thirsty dancers, relief comes via water cooler, not at a bar.
Then, there’s the dance itself.
Contra dance, as the community-based organization’s website describes, is what would result “if swing dancing and square dancing met in a bar.” Think: do-si-doing to the sound of a fiddle but in long, parallel lines rather than four-couple squares.
If the thought of dancing in the city immediately evokes imagery of a hazy nightclub and shots poured to the persistent thump of an electronic beat, the word "do-si-do" alone will transport the mind somewhere else entirely. Maybe it's that country barn stripped of its hay supply by a long winter, or it's the one association that has reached most city residents — a gymnasium just like Brooklyn Contra's but during an elementary school lesson dreaded by every cootie-phobic child.
Stereotypes aside, contra dance actually makes a lot of sense in New York City.
For one, it's an excellent way to meet people in a city that, despite its 8.5 million residents, can often feel isolating. Connections on a crowded train are few and far between, but swinging a partner round and round creates instant camaraderie. At Brooklyn Contra's events, social anxiety is soothed with name tags, beginner lessons prior to the official start time, and a friendly group of regulars eager to welcome first-timers.
And although the common perception of contra dance comes tied to specific regions, the pastime has a multicultural background fitting for the diverse makeup of New York City.
Those who last do-si-doed back in fifth grade may consider square dancing and, by extension, contra to be as American as apple pie. Technically, they’d be correct, as neither apple pie nor square dancing has strict origins in America. The first recipes for apple pie actually came from England — right around the time that English country dancing began to gain popularity.
An early predecessor to square, contra, and other social dances, English country dancing was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I during her 16th-century reign. Even then, the genre likely drew inspiration from multiple cultures, ranging from Italian dancing masters to the traditions of local country folk. As published manuals of figures and tunes spread English country dancing across Europe, countries like France, Spain, and Germany infused regional flavor into the basic blueprints.
Many of the modern-day moves came from this period, and the French influence is visible in terms like "promenade" (referring to a leisurely walk) and "dos-à-dos" (meaning "back-to-back" and Anglicized as "do-si-do").
At a recent Brooklyn Contra event, Paul Morris stood with a microphone at one end of the gymnasium and instructed the dancers' every move. Morris, a Kentucky native, has a voice made for calling contra dances, and with over two decades of contra dance experience, he has the necessary know-how, too.
Back when English country dances were flourishing in Queen Elizabeth I's court and evolving across Europe, Morris' role did not yet exist. Before callers became such an integral aspect of the experience, the dances had to make their way over to America.
There, the white settlers continued, at first, to learn and memorize the figures during lessons with dance masters. The responsibility of providing the music, though, fell on enslaved Africans. At some point, the slaves began to organize dances for themselves, incorporating movements familiar to them and providing instruction through a call-and-response pattern common in the African music tradition. As this practice of calling grew increasingly prevalent, slaves were eventually made to prompt white dancers through allemandes and promenades, and the dances from Europe took on a new life through the slaves' preservation of African culture.
Despite today’s perception of a dance floor as a place for all types of people to come together, the involvement of slaves in these early dances had no such profound impact. Never mind that the Black influence played a pivotal part in shaping social dancing as we know it — the slaves' contributions would soon be ignored in favor of a whitewashed version that would persist for decades to come.
It's unlikely, then, that Henry Ford was aware of the African influence on square dancing when he pushed for do-si-dos in elementary school curriculums and distributed an illustrated dance manual of standardized formations and sequences.
Some historians have suggested that Ford, better known for his success in the automobile industry than his dancing prowess, used square dancing to further a white supremacist agenda in the 1920s. Vocal in his antisemitic beliefs, Ford, according to these historians, viewed jazz music as a Jewish plot to corrupt Americans and control the weak-minded. Only the “wholesome” nature of fiddle music and old-fashioned dancing, Ford thought, could effectively save society. (Others have argued that, despite Ford's bigoted beliefs, it's difficult to prove that a hatred of jazz provided any real motivation for his square dancing campaign.)
Whatever his motivations, Henry Ford, of course, was not successful in thwarting the rise of jazz music. But his efforts to promote the styles of his youth did boost interest in old-fashioned dances. After Ford's personal acknowledgment of fiddler Mellie Durham turned the Maine resident into a national sensation, a flood of fiddling contests in 1926 promised a taste of fame to hopeful musicians across the country. Ford had little to no involvement in the competitions, but organizers suggested otherwise by holding the contests at Ford dealerships and hiring Henry Ford impersonators.
By the summer of 1926, the fiddling frenzy had died down, although Ford continued to hold dances into the 1940s.
Throughout its history, the square dance has never disappeared entirely, but its popularity has come and gone (and come again, and gone again) several times over the past century.
Starting in the 1930s, a caller by the name of Ed Durlacher was instrumental in spreading square dancing throughout New York City. He called at the 1939 New York World's Fair, at weekly dances at the Jones Beach Bandshell in Long Island, and at Pepsi-sponsored gatherings in Central Park.
A New York Times article from 1940 announced a square dance revival: “Square dances, never forgotten in small communities throughout the country, are returning to favor in the cities."
Contra’s big moment would come several decades later when caller Dudley Laufman’s stylistic choices caught the attention of the counterculture movement.
In the ‘60s and ‘70s, hippies headed to communes in New Hampshire to pursue apple picking and stumbled upon the one region still dedicated to keeping contra alive. These young people, who weren’t all that fond of the word “square,” had no interest in the structure and formality of the dances enjoyed by their parents, but contra caught their attention. Free from pretension, Laufman’s events encouraged would-be dancers to just show up — bare feet, casual attire, and all.
Many of today’s dances embrace this same spirit of inclusivity. There’s certainly no dress code at Brooklyn Contra’s events, where it’s normal to see a barefoot dancer in a tie-dyed sunflower T-shirt swinging a partner in a vintage-inspired shirt dress, stockings, and ballet flats. The best thing to wear, according to organizer Joe Rinehart, is “anything you can move in.” He suggests leaving big heels at home, both for ease of movement and for the sake of the gymnasium’s floor.
Since Brooklyn Contra’s founding in 2010, a committee of volunteer organizers has prioritized a comfortable, welcoming environment for all.
From personal experience, Rinehart knows that showing up to dance contra for the first time can be intimidating.
“I was terrified,” he said. “It’s a very odd experience. You have to put yourself out there socially and ask people to dance. But what was really great about it is that people would say yes.”
Further contributing to Brooklyn Contra’s vision of inclusion and diversity is an adaptation of the calls to attach less gender significance to the roles — “leads” and “follows,” rather than the standard “ladies” and “gents.” Other outdated terms, like a move called the “gypsy,” have been replaced as well.
All over the country, gender-free calling has become a common way to modernize traditional folk dances and appeal to a new crowd. The alternative designations vary. One of the earliest swaps was “bands” and “bares” back in the late ‘80s, but in recent years, “larks” and “ravens” seems to have gained the greatest amount of traction, with the lark position standing on the left side and the raven on the right.
Like Brooklyn Contra, Baltimore Square Dance has done away with gendered language.
“There's definitely been a movement over the past decades to make sure the terms used are appropriate and welcoming,” said Brad Kolodner, the co-founder of Baltimore Square Dance and a driving force of the old-time music scene in Baltimore.
“Maybe two guys want to dance together, or two women, or two non-binary folks. You don't have to be a ‘gent’ or a ‘lady’ to do the dance,” he continued. “We don’t make a big deal about gender-free calling. We’ve just tried to normalize it.”
With over 200 people attending a typical Baltimore Square Dance event, an emphasis on inclusion is crucial. Since the initial dance in November 2013, growth has come primarily through word of mouth, meaning the continuation of the event’s success relies heavily on attendees feeling welcome and having a good time. And for Kolodner, motivation for creating a long-lasting, enjoyable event comes from a desire to share not only his passion but his upbringing.
Kolodner's father is Ken Kolodner, a highly regarded hammered dulcimer player and fiddler. The younger Kolodner grew up immersed in his father's music. Arriving home from school, he'd find his dad practicing in the living room, and at night, the sound of the hammered dulcimer served as a lullaby.
"Whatever your parents do, you just assume that's normal," Kolodner said. "I didn't understand quite how special it was until I grew up a bit and realized how fortunate I was to have such incredible access to this kind of music in my own house."
An interest in old-time music as a teenager led to a father-son duo act by college, which turned into four albums, dozens of shows a year, and the Baltimore Old Time Jam, a long-standing bi-weekly bluegrass meetup. It was this last accomplishment that led to the formation of Baltimore Square Dance, after Kolodner recognized the larger potential of the informal square dances that often popped up in the back of Liam Flynn's Ale House during the jam sessions.
Square dancing with a bunch of bluegrass musicians was akin to preaching to the choir, but throughout Baltimore awaited a new congregation seeking quirky alternatives to the run-of-the-mill nightlife scene. Square dancing simply wasn’t yet on the radars of those who had been forced to partner up in fifth grade and then never again gave the activity a second thought.
“You hear square dance, and all these images flood your mind. People have this idea that to square dance, you have to look a certain way, or you have to act a certain way. But really, you just show up,” said Kolodner.
Through Baltimore Square Dance, Kolodner has worked to dispel these preconceived notions, particularly the misjudged categorization of Baltimore as an unusual place to go square dancing.
The stereotype of bluegrass as a musical tradition confined to the rural South considers only the genre’s origins, not its expansion. It shouldn’t come as a shock, really, that the remote populations of Appalachia carried the sounds of their region with them when seeking industrial jobs in urban locales during the 20th century. And so was the case in Baltimore, where soon-to-be bluegrass legends got their start playing at bohemian house parties and in cramped local bars.
In 1984, Baltimore hosted the National Square Dance Convention, a three-day extravaganza spread out across 11 dance halls and four outdoor dancing areas. "Baltimore is one square dancing town," declared an ad in the American Square Dance magazine, positioning the city as a recently revitalized hub of history and culture.
Square dancing is also the state folk dance of Maryland, although this is not so much a reflection of the state's specific traditions as it is the result of a highly divisive campaign launched in hopes of eventually cementing square dancing as the national folk dance of the United States.
Kolodner, often found onstage playing fiddle or banjo during Baltimore Square Dance's events, is both aware of his role in furthering the story of bluegrass in Baltimore and unafraid to deviate from the past.
“The point of the dance isn't so much to preserve a tradition as it is to build community and bring joy into the lives of those who live in Baltimore,” he said.
At the restored 1870s church in Pigtown where Baltimore Square Dance holds a majority of events, formality may have been thrown out the (very large, arch-top) window. Another side of square dancing, however, retains quite a bit more structure.
Not to be confused with the always beginner-friendly format at Baltimore Square Dance events, Modern Western square dancing requires participants to not only know at least some of the terminology but to then be able to execute those calls on the fly. Notably absent are the slower, music-free walkthroughs that precede each dance at both Brooklyn Contra and Baltimore Square Dance. That's by design, as the choreography in Modern Western square dancing isn't based on the repetition of simple sequences but instead represents the impromptu whims of the caller.
The spontaneity of each individual dance necessitates a systematic overall approach to Modern Western square dancing.
Dancers progress through a series of different levels, each building upon the one prior with additional calls and concepts. At the "mainstream" level, 69 calls must be grasped. For "plus," that number jumps to 100. "Advanced" is split into two tiers, the first with 146 calls and concepts and the second with 181. And if someone were to progress through all four sublevels of the "challenge" program, they'd wind up with knowledge of approximately 1,000 calls and 100 concepts.
For the sake of consistency, an international society of square dance callers has been standardizing Modern Western square dance since the 1970s.
Callerlab, officially established in 1974, ensures that the terminology at one dance precisely matches that of another, such that even dances in overseas countries are called in English. Because of these efforts, gender-based cues are still the norm at Modern Western square dancing clubs — even those specifically serving the LGBTQ+ community. When Jim Babcock, accustomed at the time to contra dancing, initially learned of Modern Western square dance, he didn’t understand why anyone would be drawn to the complicated-sounding style over contra’s smooth, straightforward approach.
Eventually, Babcock’s mounting curiosity led him to a Modern Western square dance lesson. To his surprise, he loved it just as much as he did contra dancing. With a firm grasp on many of the moves from his prior folk dancing experience, Babcock progressed through the first two levels after spending a year or so with each. His journey through the "advanced" level took about three years, with the interruption of COVID-19 slowing his momentum.
Now, Babcock is the president of Times Squares, New York’s only active LGBTQ+ square dance club.
Gay square dancing probably isn’t among those stereotypical images that come up at the thought of a do-si-do, but back in the 1980s, the presence of the LGBTQ+ community was extensive enough to warrant the development of the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs. Currently, the umbrella organization lists nearly 60 member clubs in locations ranging from Tokyo to Texas.
“A lot of the gay groups in the ‘70s and ‘80s were trying to find ways to connect with people that weren’t centered around bars and drinking,” said Babcock.
And so, gay square dancing clubs began to form, including Times Squares in 1984. Beside fostering connections, the clubs also became a place where gay dancers could feel immediately welcome, something that wasn't a guarantee otherwise.
"Gay people being accepted at straight clubs is the result of a lot of work over the years," Babcock said.
Although Callerlab's guidelines have perpetuated the usage of "ladies" and "gents'' in the world of Modern Western square dancing, it would make little sense for LGBTQ+ events to strictly enforce gender roles. At Times Squares, attendees are free to choose whichever position they please. Some members develop preferences, but Babcock recommends learning both for maximum flexibility.
Besides the fluidity of roles, several other distinctions set gay square dancing apart. For one, gay clubs have developed their own flourishes, referring to the stylistic touches that more experienced dancers may add to basic calls.
And whereas Modern Western square dancing generally embraces petticoats and cowboy hats, gay clubs often eschew elaborate apparel in favor of casual dress. Additionally, the matching outfits worn by partners at non-gay clubs are a rare sight in the LGBTQ+ square dancing community. This presents a greater challenge for the caller, who must keep track of each couple’s position without any obvious visual reminders to distinguish one pairing from another.
There are also fly-ins, invitations to gather for a long weekend in a host club’s city. Gay clubs, fewer in number, tend to lack nearby connections to other groups of the same type. With a fly-in comes the valuable opportunity for clubs based in different states to get together. Times Squares’ turn to host comes every October or November with a three-day affair called “Peel the Pumpkin.”
At the start of a recent Baltimore Square Dance event, the spacious interior of Pigtown's Mobtown Ballroom barely felt big enough for the eager-to-dance crowd. Attendees squeezed into every corner of the crowded space as they formed their first four-couple squares of the night.
Only that initial dance felt quite so cramped. As the night went on, people retired to tables periodically to rest their feet, and families with small children headed home for bedtime. Others skipped dances to stop by the bar. (Alcohol and dimmer lighting at the late-evening event nudges Baltimore Square Dance closer toward the ambiance expected of a typical Saturday night destination.)
A springtime gathering with Brooklyn Contra was similarly well-attended, with two sets of parallel lines spanning the length of the gymnasium from the band to the snack table.
Labeling the current level of interest a "revival" may not be entirely accurate, given that both Brooklyn Contra and Baltimore Square Dance have been around for some time. But after the pandemic put a pause to any interaction with even a passing resemblance to a promenade, social dancing has felt like a welcome shift from social distancing, as evidenced by high turnouts at the community-centric events.
For Times Squares, it took until 2022 to once again feel some sense of normalcy, but attendance still lags behind pre-pandemic levels. The club hopes to combat this sluggish return with additional open houses, one per month, intended to attract first-time dancers. Free of charge, the open houses will introduce attendees to Modern Western square dance and familiarize them with some of the most common calls.
According to Babcock, the popularity of gay Modern Western square dancing peaked in the ‘90s. Since then, growth has been a challenge. Many of Times Squares’ members have been dancing with the club for decades, and each departure is deeply felt.
“Over time, people get older. People move away,” Babcock said. “We did have two members pass away this year. Our club is slowly shrinking, but we’re keeping it together.”
Estimating the average age somewhere in the high 60s, Babcock admits that the club’s demographics may seem “less exciting” to younger generations. He’s hopeful, though, that the trend will shift.
“There’s a club in Ottawa that attracted the attention of a social media influencer, and it totally changed their dynamic. They have two dozen new members, all over the map of gender identities, ages, and ethnicities,” said Babcock.
Welcome to my elementary Autism Classroom Tour, where the magic happens! Here you’ll find me spending most of my days, hanging out with tiny humans bringing me joy and never ceasing to amaze me! It really is my home away from home. Does anyone else ever feel like you’re living at school? I have spent a lot of time (and a lot of money) on my classroom, making it as functional as possible for my students.
My second home, or Kaluger’s Koyotes as we are known on campus, is a special education day class for the moderate/severe Autism population. I currently teach the grades Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten. I have a total of 10 students, which is actually our maximum amount of students if you can believe that! The ratio for our program is 2:1 and I have 4 paraprofessionals. In total, there are 5 adults and 10 students (3 girls and 7 boys). I am loving having so many girls this year!
I just love my classroom door; it’s a real conversation piece around the school! My school really is all inclusive – it doesn’t hurt that our admin comes from a sped background! As we are a peanut and tree nut free classroom, I am always making sure that information is clearly labeled so anyone entering is aware. We also use baby gates in our doorways, this is the first school district I’ve seen that uses them in an Autism classroom and can I just take a moment to say how amazing they work?!
I’ve also hung a picture of my facility dog, Connie! I know that not everyone is a fan of dogs, so I like for people to know the classroom is home to my four-legged assistant before they enter. Canine Companions facility dogs are highly trained and trustworthy dogs partnered with a professional facilitator who is directly serving clients with special needs. She knows over 40 commands!
Colored dots on the floor are the first thing you see when entering my Autism classroom. These dots are velcro (hurray for no more ruining the carpet with tape!) which my students use as markers for lining up. (you can find them here! affiliate link)
Next, you will see a kidney table that students use for centers and whole group. The 3-drawer organizer next to the table holds writing utensils, reading and math curriculum. The letters of the alphabet and ten frames hang on the walls.
You’ll notice my standing desk (affiliate link) tucked in the back of the room (a highly recommended accessory for a teacher always on the move!). If you’re a teacher you know sometimes there is no time to sit!
You may also notice the dog crate in the corner- that’s where Connie takes her much-needed and hard-earned breaks throughout the day! Inside is a soft bed and a waterproof mat that holds her water dish. I left her water on the carpet at first but quickly learned my mistake as soon as one of my students dumped it out all over the floor! Hanging on her crate is a visual that says “Dog on break, do not touch”. Next to her crate is a laundry basket that has a tug strap attached. She is able to pull the basket backwards across the room!
Turning right, you’ll see the students’ cubbies. When they arrive, the students place their lunches in their cubby and hang up their backpack! You may also notice our Autism classroom rules, along with blue cubbies, for items or work that get sent home.
These visuals hang near the cubbies. A backpack routine and a CORE board are visible for students to access if needed. Similar visuals can be found here.
When entering through the front door and turning left you will see quite a few things! First, you might notice an orange button- this has a bathroom icon and when pressed says, “Bathroom.” A few of my non-verbal students use this to request a potty break.
Another set of cubbies holds manipulatives for our “morning tub” activity. This is the very first activity that my students do each day. You will also notice a birthday wall and word wall. The words that I use and focus on are functional (ie go, eat, more). You might also notice the clipboards hanging, which are used for data collection. You’ll also notice one of our center tables! I have multiple visuals hanging too, you know those are always needed FAST!
On the front of the cabinet that holds my data collection clipboards I have all staff listed (usually I have pictures of students under each name) which is used to know who will take data on what student. I also have more visuals and token boards for easy access. If you know, you know!!
Continue walking right and you will see my “calm corner”. Students use this when they need a break or a quiet place to calm down. Sometimes, adults prompt them to go sit and other times they know when they need to go calm down and they go independently. I have found this space to be essential in an Autism classroom. Some items that might be helpful to students are: fidgets, sequin pillows, weighted blanket, and an egg chair.
Adjacent to the calm down corner is our circle time spot. We do calendar and the whole group follows directions here. Different seating options include cube chairs (affiliate link), regular chairs and floor cushions. Students are able to choose where they’d like to sit within this circle.
The numbered balloons on the wall are used near the end of the year as a countdown to wonderful summer vacation! Students pop one a day and inside is a picture icon of a surprise activity. Surprisingly, they really love popping the balloons.
As you can probably notice, I think students thrive off clear, defined locations. Furniture partitions various areas of my classroom.
This next area is my play center. When students have free choice, they may go and choose any item. Students remain in this clearly defined area. There are a variety of toys and items for the students to choose from. The door that you see leads to the upper grade structured Autism classroom.
If you keep turning (are you dizzy yet?) you will see another center table and my “teacher area”. I have a small table to help block off the area. It hold crates containing file folders and curriculum.
Next to my standing desk you will see the dog crate, filling cabinet, fridge and microwave. The kidney table is in front of white boards that hold the classroom schedule, staff breaks, and important information listed. If you are wondering what the blue covers are on the lights they are light filters! It really helps make those florescent lights less bothersome!
Here is my daily schedule! I split my class for part of the day so that it is more manageable. I reference the schedule multiple times a day until they have learned our routine. Depending on student need, I will refer to it more often or make individual schedules. I rely heavily on using timers as well!
Making a full circle brings us to this view of the front of my classroom. On the very top of my whiteboard rest tubs for each month with my monthly activities. Behind the white boards I have quite the collection of manipluatives, puzzles, and games!
I hope you enjoyed touring my Kindergarten Autism classroom. What questions do you have?

Whether managing the lights and darks, or compartmentalizing your drawers to separate paired items, or creating new storage items to help you with all your things, you can do easy bedroom organizing before the holiday starts to kick in. The holiday will keep you busy, so you better start adapting some bedroom organization ideas to make your life easier. Take it from me because I learned these things the hard way. Check out all the different ways you can organize efficiently. See the list below and tell me what works best for you!
This is so effective for small bedroom spaces because you're maximizing the space above and below your closet. It makes life easy by compelling you to sort out the lights and the darks, too! Though you can customize these containers according to your needs, like storing seasonal items apart from clothes.
Use some space that seems to be dead or awkward and turn it into something useful! This corner looks like you can't put anything in there but with the help of shelves, it turns out to be a storage space that can hold books, vases, and other items you wish to display. Take a look at your corners at home and see if you can apply this trick.
Who thought bins could look this chic and personalized? With the help of an upgrade and custom tags, these dollar-store bins can be your storage friend. Put your craft items, supplies, hair accessories or just about anything else in these storage bins, and you'll see some improvement in your bedroom organization.
Remember the items you have in your room that shouldn't really have a permanent space? Books from the library, gifts you have to give, seasonal clothes, and used things you want to donate? Store them like this, with correct labels. It's very efficient because you can organize them and at the same time, not forget what to do with them. You also know what is inside by writing it on the label area.
You take a look at your closet space and think it's full, but really, you just did not maximize the space. Avoid piling up your clothes and other items. Use racks to properly organize your closet, and have wires, hooks, or pins where you can hang your items. Also, place similar items together and put them in one place. Indeed, organizing makes life easier.
Take good care of your precious jewelry and accessories with this kind of storage. Hang those necklaces to avoid coiling, and for easy access too. Sort rings and other items in boxes. For your dangling earrings, hook them up on the board. This will eliminate the chance of losing a piece or two, or wasting time finding your accessories.
This type of shoe storage is a clever hack for those who want to gain the easiest access to their shoes. I can imagine having one in my room, and being able to plan my outfit already because I can see my shoes! Also, a lot of shoe storage idea often take more space than necessary. This might do the trick for your room.
Drawers are organizers in themselves but sometimes, it's not enough to just put your clothing items in there. When it involves so many pieces that are different from one another, it would be wise to have drawer organizers. This way your socks won't mix up with your scarves, hankies, or with your shoelaces.

With proper organization, your bedroom can hold so many essential items. Take this area in the bedroom– it looks narrow but it has maximized as much space as possible. The shelves near the ceiling can store up your bags and other items.
Some bedrooms also hold mini offices, enough for your desk, computer, supplies and work documents. You can avoid the clutter by using drawers to organize most of your office items. This way you stay productive in the confines of your bedroom.
If a big table or desk can use up a large space in your bedroom, go for a smaller one. Don't worry about where to put your office supplies and papers. A pegboard can definitely help you with that. Use a pegboard and attach racks, rolls, hooks, and other things to hold your items. It would be a truly organized mini office inside your bedroom.
Yes, cake stands can hold other items too. Place the cake stand on your desk, side table or vanity table and place several items so you can easily locate them. Got plenty of perfume bottles? Place it there. Want to put all your makeup in one place? The cake stand would be the perfect spot.
Whether your bedroom is large or small these organizing ideas will keep everything in order, giving you relaxing place to rest in. The empty space under your bed can be used as a practical space with these under the bed drawers. Made by installing wheels to a wooden box, or you can repurpose old drawer from a chest.
Make use of headboard storage space by integrating shelving for everything from books and lamps to favorite framed photos. You can purchase shelved headboards, or build your own out of old drawers or pallets.
Save some space with a hanging laundry hamper hiding discreetly at the back of a door. It’s easy to create your own with fabric and an embroidery hoop.
Everyone needs to store trash somewhere. The only issue is that any trash bin will use at least a square foot of space. Until it doesn’t because you’re going to hide yours in a tilting cabinet. Not only will it keep your waste out of sight, but it’ll also double as a makeup counter or nightstand.
This guide doesn't get old, and you can use it especially on days when you feel like there's just so much going on in your closet. Once you free up your closet from the items you don't need, you'll be surprised at how much space you actually have. Make some important decisions, like keeping what you need and letting go of the items you no longer use. This infographic is helpful in making the right decision. So have fun decluttering and trace your path as you go!
Here is a video about more storage tips to add to your bedroom organization ideas from Better Homes and Gardens:
Create more space in your bedroom by simply organizing your space. You might be surprised at how much room there is left for the things that will come your way, especially this holiday season. Adapt these ideas to your room for more efficient storing.

]]>1. Get rid of what you don’t need: The first step to organizing your garage is to declutter. Get rid of all the things you no longer need or use. For example, donate old toys, sell unwanted tools or sports equipment and recycle anything that’s broken. This will free up space and make it easier to store the items you do need.
2. Divide the space into zones: Divide your garage into zones based on the items you store there. For example, dedicate an area for gardening tools, one for sports equipment, and another for automotive supplies. You could use shelving or storage cabinets to make each zone separate and organized.
3. Use wall space: Walls provide a great opportunity to free up floor space and get items off the ground. Install some sturdy wall shelves or pegboards to hang tools, bikes, and equipment. You could also install overhead storage racks for holiday decorations or bulky items that don’t need frequent access.
4. Invest in storage containers: Storing items in labeled containers can make it easier to find them when you need them. Invest in some sturdy plastic storage containers and label each with its contents. Clear containers are particularly helpful as they allow you to see what’s inside without opening them.
5. Use hooks and hangers: Hooks and hangers are perfect for storing items that have odd shapes or sizes. They’re also great for items that you may need to grab quickly, such as coats, hats, and bags. Install a few hooks on the back of the garage door or use them on the walls to hang items such as folding chairs.
6. Create a workspace: If you use your garage as a workshop, consider creating a dedicated workspace. This could be a workbench, a table or even a small desk. Having a designated area to work in can help you stay organized and focused.
7. Label everything: Labels are useful for finding items quickly and efficiently. Consider labeling your storage containers, shelves, and cabinets. You could even make a simple map of the garage and label where each item is stored.
8. Get creative with storage: Be creative with how you store items in your garage. For example, consider using a shoe organizer to store small gardening tools. Hang items such as bicycles or ladders from the ceiling. The possibilities are endless.
9. Keep it clean: To keep your garage organized, you need to keep it clean. Sweep the floors regularly to prevent dust and debris from accumulating. Also, wipe down surfaces and shelving to keep them free of grease and grime.
10. Make it beautiful: Finally, don’t forget that your garage can be both functional and beautiful. Consider adding a fresh coat of paint or installing some artwork or decorative signs. Making your garage beautiful can inspire you to keep it organized and tidy.
Organizing your garage may seem like a daunting task, but by following these 10 tips, it can become an achievable goal. Remember to declutter, create storage zones, get creative with storage, and keep it clean. Additionally, labeling, adding hooks, and investing in storage containers can make a huge difference. And don’t forget to make your garage beautiful by adding some decorative touches. With a little effort, you can turn your garage into a functional and stylish space that you’ll be proud to show off.

Nikki
I love a good dollar store organizing hack, because I think about organization more in terms of function than form. I love the look of gorgeous, high-end organizing systems as much as the next gal, but I’d rather spend money on something fun than spend it on bins, baskets, and other organizing tools I can find at any dollar store.
Since most of us homemakers have a budget to consider, it’s important to remember that getting organized doesn’t have to cost a fortune! That was the motivation behind a roundup of dollar store organizing hacks I shared a few years back.
And since being budget-conscious never goes out of style, I thought it was high time to revisit the subject! :-) Here you’ll find another batch of organizing hacks centered around things you can find at your nearest dollar store. Let’s get started!

Need help keeping track of all your appointments and to-do lists? Dollar stores offer a surprising variety of calendars and planners!
Look for wall calendars, desk calendars, pocket-size calendars, and more. It’s a great way to keep yourself on track without emptying your wallet to do it!

Keep track of your bills, contracts, and other important documents with portfolios, folders, and envelopes from the dollar store. I even found a binder of notecards with section dividers at my local dollar store that I’ve been using to keep recipes handy.

These dollar store organizers were advertised as bins for picture books, but that’s certainly not the only way you could use them. I personally thought they would make a perfect solution for storing table linens like napkins, placemats, and tablecloths!
Small containers with locking lids are extremely versatile, and you can find them at many dollar stores! Use them while you travel to store bar soap, hair accessories, cotton swabs, and more.
Speaking of travel, I also found this handy pencil case that’s perfect for my makeup brushes. It protects them in transit and has the added benefit of being easy to clean!
Mesh baskets like this one are a mainstay at dollar stores, and there’s a million ways to use them at home. Try mounting one on a wall and hanging your earrings from it! You can also store things inside the basket, like bracelets and other accessories.

Coat closets aren’t always the most useful if you’re short on storage space. But with a trip to the dollar store and a little bit of creativity, you can make it a much more functional space!
One way to add more storage to a coat closet is to make your own hanging basket system. Just thread the handles of a few lightweight baskets over the hook of a hanger, then hang them from the bar in the closet.
Use your hanging baskets to store craft supplies, clothes, or anything else you want to keep organized!
Kids aren’t the only ones who can benefit from the wide variety of stickers that most dollar stores offer! You can use small, colored stickers to color code items around the house.
For instance, a few sheets of star-shaped stickers can help you color code your collection of herbs and spices! Use green for dried herbs, purple for chilis and spicy powders, yellow for baking spices, etc. A simple color coding system like this makes it easier to find what you’re looking for.
I found a bag of coin wrappers at the dollar store recently, and I’m kicking myself that I didn’t think of buying them there sooner! (I bought a package on Amazon recently for much more than a dollar and ended up with way too many of them!)
With a collection of coin wrappers at home, you can save the fees of going to a coin counting machine and keep that money in your pocket.

]]>Since a very young age, I have been curious about how things work. Thanks to my dad, my curiosity was satiated with an ample supply of tools and knowledge. In 6th grade, I got my first experience with a soldering iron and it all took off from there. Very quickly, I set up a work bench to do my projects on. Over the years, the working setup improved, moved and evolved.
The electronics lab bench has been optimized over the years and redesigned to fit in a smaller space. Its very functional, customized and economical. I use high quality tools but only where it makes sense. Most of the products I use, I have used for a while and have tested other cheaper alternatives, only to land on the current one. Some, I am still figuring out the best version of.
In this article, I will dive deep into every part of my workbench and show you the structure, organization, tools and parts I have collected over the years. The idea is that with this guide, my bench can be replicated with the same functionality in minimal time. Lets get into it. Feel free to navigate to parts you are interested in.
The bench is built using a 78″x24″ table top from Ikea and two Alex drawers to support it. The grey matt on the bench is a Weller ESD mat with high temperature resistance. I also have a cutting mat stowed underneath the bench for any cutting needs I may have.
Above the bench are 10″ deep wall mounted shelving. I opted for wall mounted since it is the most compact solution. The shelves are from home depot and I am using the Rubbermaid rail mounting system.
The lighting is done using two 90+ CRI LED strips mounted underneath the lowest shelf, each with a different color temperature. They are controlled using a touch switch and powered from a 24V PSU. The light can be too bright at times so I am planning to add PWM control in the future to modify brightness and net color temperature as well. It also doesn’t spread too evenly so I am looking into a diffuser as well.
All the power distribution is done using a long 12 port power strip that is mounted on a wire management tray. All the PSU’s and power wiring is managed on the tray to avoid a dangly mess underneath the desk.
I also have a bench PC that is extremely useful to collect data, interact with the oscilloscope and view schematics, datasheets etc. The display for the bench is mounted on the wall with a swivel arm.

The main appeal of my bench is the organization. I obsess over the little details and have spent a lot of time to organize every part of the bench. Organization is an ever going process though so it will never be done, it will just keep getting better.
Lets look at the organizational structure I have implemented. Everything is placed in a way that the most used things are the easiest to get to. Most frequent tools, instruments and components are out in the open. Less frequently used stuff is stored in drawers, bins and compartment boxes. I like to keep things consistent as much as possible since it makes storing them easier.
At this point, I would like to point out that you need a way to label things. Masking tape and a sharpie work great but you can get fancy with a label maker or label printer. I use them all based on what I am labelling and how permanent/important I expect it to be.
Lets start with the bench top. I have a main bin of tools that always holds a certain set of tools and based on what I am working on, will store additional tools as well. It serves as a quick way to stow away tools when not needed and easily retrieve them when needed.
The soldering iron and hot air rework station are to the right since I am right handed. They are quick to reach but also not in the way. Other things are lined up where they fit like the power supply, solder wire, USB charging station etc. I keep the left area clear so I can spread out my project further. I also usually keep a smaller bin to hold components I am actively using on the left.
There are 3 primary types of containers I use to store all my stuff:
For the drawers, I use Akro-Mills drawers as they are decent quality and come in a variety of configurations. I use these to store electronic components. Most of the drawer space is taken by my tracked inventory of components for PCB designs. I also have other electronic components like relays, panel mount switches, magnets etc. in the drawers. They are all labelled and organized in a logical way so that similar stuff is together. For example all SMD components are grouped together.
I mainly use 2 types of compartment boxes. One is the clear 10.8x7x1.8″ box that is cheap and good for a variety of parts due to its modular compartments. I store connectors, hardware, modules and dev boards in these boxes. I usually buy kits of thing from Amazon and each comes in its own unique box so I have found it better to shift the parts to these standard boxes. They are much easier to store and navigate when you are looking for something. These are stacked on the second shelf. I also do have smaller compartment boxes for some of the smaller connectors. For example all JST SH connectors go in a small box. But I have tried to have a few different sizes and stick to those instead of having each connector be its own type of box. Initially, that can work but as you add more types of parts, it gets annoying. The smaller boxes are stored in the main drawers. There are some things like connectors which come in so many shapes, sizes and use cases that I find it best to store them appropriately in different containers and different locations. My more frequently used connectors are in the drawer next to me but the less frequent ones are in the larger compartment boxes.
The other type of box I use is the Aidetek SMD component storage box. I absolutely love these things and they amazing to store a large number of components in a small volume. I have all my frequently used components in these boxes and I keep them on the first shelf for quick access.
There is a lot of things that cant fit in either of the above two options so I use bins for those. Again, I have tried to use only two sizes so that its easy to store them and they look visually more aesthetic. The top shelf is taken by bins for larger things like tapes, adhesives etc. I have larger bins with parts in the closet that hold things I very rarely need to access.
The drawers on both ends of my desk are used to store a variety of tools, parts and consumable supplies. But more importantly, I use small organizing containers to keep things inside the drawers fairly well organized. I use these ones for the shallow drawers and these for the deep ones.
The drawers I can access most easily are the top left two drawers and they hold more tools and soldering supplies. The top drawers on the right are unfortunately blocked by the soldering station wires so I keep things I use less frequently in those.
In the lower drawers, I keep more supplies and parts like wires, heat shrink, connectors etc.
On the left edge of the shelves, I have a test lead holder that I use to hang all my test leads including oscilloscope leads, Minigrabber leads, alligator jumper cables etc. Not only does this keep them straight, it also keeps them untangled and ready to use.
I have more than a thousand different electric components for PCBs and trying to find which one I have became very time consuming. So I spent even more time coming up with an inventory system for the components. The system is based on Airtable and it stores entries for each component. It automatically generates a nice label that I can use to re-bag the components since they consume so much less space in my bags compared to what LCSC, Digikey etc. send them in. I also have automation scripts to add components into the database from CSV files.
I will go into much more depth on the inventory system in a separate post that I will link here when its up. There are a lot of details about the system I want to document and share.

I use the following furniture elements for the setup.
Most of the time, the desk looks like this and is filled with prototypes and parts of the current project I am working on.
A 3D printer is a very useful and powerful tool to have. Not only can you use it to optimize your lab but you can also prototype enclosures and mechanisms for your designs. There are too many options out there and the best option for you will be based on what is it that you are looking for. You can get cheaper units that can do basic printing well and might require a bit more attention and care. Or you could go for higher end units that just work and require minimal tinkering.
I have found the Ender 3 Pro with some basic upgrades to be a great value for money and the best place to get started with. Once you feel like you need a more capable printer because you need to print an engineering material or print larger quantity, you can invest in a higher end model.
Following are links to the printer and recommended upgrade parts.
I hope this guide will provide some inspiration for you to spice up your setup. Let me know if you have any questions. Pleaseany recommendations for products you have found useful around the lab.

]]>Clutter can have a major impact on your mental health, and it’s something that many people struggle with on a daily basis. Whether it’s piles of paper on your desk, clothes scattered about your bedroom, or a cluttered kitchen counter, excess stuff can weigh you down and contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety.
The term “depression room” is fairly new, made popular in internet culture by TikTok and YouTube videos with hundreds of millions of views. But the link between clutter and mental health has long been established. In this blog post, we’ll explore the connection and offer some tips on how to declutter your space and take control of your environment.
So, what does clutter do to your mental health? For starters, it can make you feel overwhelmed and anxious. When you’re surrounded by clutter, it can be difficult to relax and unwind, and it can be tough to focus on tasks and responsibilities. The physical manifestation of clutter can also be a constant reminder of unfinished projects and tasks, which can lead to feelings of guilt and shame.
In addition to contributing to stress and anxiety, clutter can also have a negative impact on your overall sense of well-being. A cluttered space can make you feel disconnected from your home and personal life, and it can be difficult to find joy and contentment when you’re constantly surrounded by chaos.
So, what can you do about it? The first step is to get organized and declutter your space. This may seem like a daunting task, but it’s important to take it one step at a time. Start by tackling one room or area and focus on getting rid of items that you no longer need or use. Donate or sell items that are still in good condition, and consider hiring a professional organizer if you’re feeling overwhelmed. If you need some extra space to house things like seasonal clothing or items you don’t use every day, consider renting a storage unit to free up valuable space at home.
In addition to decluttering your space, it’s also important to establish routines and habits that help you maintain a clean and organized environment. This might include setting aside time each day to tidy up, setting limits on the number of items you allow in your home, and finding ways to store and organize your possessions in a way that works for you. Remember, it’s okay to strive for “clean enough.” How you feel in your space is the most important thing to pay attention to.
It’s also worth noting that clutter can sometimes be a symptom of deeper issues, such as hoarding behavior or an inability to let go of certain items. If you find that you’re struggling to declutter and keep a clean and organized space, it may be helpful to seek out the support of a mental health professional.
In conclusion, clutter can have a major impact on your mental health, and it’s important to take steps to declutter your space and set up routines that help you maintain a clean and organized environment. By taking control of your environment, you can improve your sense of well-being and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

Living in a dorm can be a great way to make friends, learn new things, and gain independence. However, living in a small, shared space can also present some challenges. As you prepare for your college dorm experience, it’s important to consider what to bring to your college dorm to make the most of your space and create a comfortable living environment. There are a lot of items to consider when packing for your new home. In this article, we will explore some of the best college dorms and what to bring to your college dorm to ensure a successful and enjoyable dorm life experience.
Here’s some food for thought! Have you ever considered spending the best years of your life in college towns that are hidden gems? You’ll enjoy various perks, such as more spacious dorms with the latest smart gadgets. Plus, you’ll get the chance to stand out from the crowd as the teacher-student ratio is more advantageous than in major colleges.
Starting college is an exciting adventure, but it can also be daunting. Especially when it comes to efficient and time-saving packing for your college dorm. It’s important to bring only the essentials to your new living space, so you can maximize your limited space and create a comfortable home away from home. Remember, dorms can be roomier and cozier in little-known colleges with great potentials, such as Hendrix College in Conway, AR, or St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA!
Knowing what to bring to college dorm can make a big difference in your dorm life experience. So, whether you’re a first-time college student or a veteran, let’s find out what you need to bring with you to make your experience better.
Your bed is where you’ll spend a lot of time in your dorm, so it’s important to have comfortable bedding. A comfortable and cozy bed is a must-have for a good night’s sleep. Bring along sheets, pillows, a comforter, and a mattress pad to make your bed as comfortable as possible. If you’re short on space, consider using storage bags that compress your bedding to save space. Did you know that you can improvise your own DIY bed? Moreover, a bedroom repaint is also a good idea if the college administration allows it!
When it comes to packing clothes, it’s best to bring a mix of comfortable and dressy outfits. You’ll need casual clothes for everyday wear, such as t-shirts, shorts, jeans, and sweatpants. Additionally, bring some nicer clothes for special occasions, such as a job interview or a formal event. Your overall appearance can be the key to success!
Don’t forget to pack some comfortable shoes as well, such as sneakers or sandals. It’s important to consider the weather when deciding what to bring to the college dorm. If you’re moving to a colder climate, pack warm clothes like jackets, scarves, and hats. If you’re moving to a warmer climate, pack lighter clothes like shorts, t-shirts, and sunhats. Most dorm rooms have limited closet and drawer space, so it’s best to bring clothes that can be easily folded or hung. Consider using vacuum-sealed bags to save space and keep your clothes fresh.
Personal hygiene is essential, and it’s important to have all the necessary toiletries. Pack a shower caddy to make it easy to transport your toiletries to and from the communal bathroom. Bring all the basics such as toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and deodorant. Consider bringing a small mirror and a hairdryer, too. Don’t forget about the little things that make a big difference, like razors, shaving cream, and feminine hygiene products. If you wear contacts, pack your solution and a spare pair of glasses. And, of course, bring plenty of towels and washcloths.
Nowadays, it’s almost impossible to live without electronics. First and foremost, bring a laptop or tablet for your academic needs, your personal home office must-haves. Most colleges require students to complete assignments online, so having a reliable device is essential. Plus, they’re indispensable tools for acquiring knowledge and skills.
Don’t forget to pack your charger, too! If you’re a music lover, bring a portable speaker or headphones to enjoy your tunes without disturbing your roommates. Other essential electronics to consider include a power strip, surge protector, and extension cords. These items will help you keep all your devices charged and organized while also reducing clutter. However, be mindful of your dorm’s electronics policy. Some colleges have restrictions on certain devices, such as mini-fridges or space heaters. Be sure to check with your dorm administrator before packing.

Knowing what to bring to a college dorm when it comes to desk supplies is essential for academic success. Bring a good quality desk lamp. This will not only help you study more efficiently but also create a comfortable and welcoming environment in your room. Additionally, a desk calendar or planner can help you stay on top of your assignments and schedule. Other essential desk supplies include pens, pencils, highlighters, markers, and erasers. Don’t forget to bring a stapler, tape, and paper clips as well. You may also want to consider investing in a printer or scanner for your academic needs. If you’re taking classes that require textbooks, bring bookends or a bookshelf to keep them organized and easily accessible. And, of course, don’t forget about your calculator and any other academic tools you may need. Consider bringing some personal touches to your desk to make it feel like home. A small plant, picture frame, or inspirational quote can make a big difference in creating a comfortable and inviting workspace.
Dorm rooms can be small, so it’s important to bring creative storage solutions to keep your space organized. One of the best ways to maximize space in your dorm room is by bringing storage containers. Consider investing in plastic bins or under-bed storage containers to keep your belongings organized on a budget and out of the way. You may also want to bring some hangers and a hanging organizer for your closet.
Another great storage solution is a set of shelves or a bookcase. These items can help you keep your books, papers, and other belongings organized and easily accessible. Don’t forget to bring some decorative baskets or storage boxes to add some style to your room while keeping things tidy. If you’re sharing a dorm room with a roommate, it’s important to coordinate storage solutions and make sure everyone has their own designated space. You may want to consider bringing a room divider or curtain to create some separation and privacy.
Make your dorm feel like home. Firstly, consider bringing some posters or wall art to add some personality and color to your room. You can also bring some string lights or a lamp to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Plants are also a great way to add some life and vibrancy to your dorm room. You can choose a small plant that’s easy to care for, such as a succulent or cactus, or opt for a larger plant to make a statement. Other decorative items to consider bringing include a rug, curtains, and some framed photos or artwork. These items can help add warmth and comfort to your dorm room while also reflecting your personal style. Adding a dash of Hygge lifestyle elements could boost overall appearances.
When it comes to what to bring to college dorm, it’s important to remember that less is more. You won’t have a lot of space so only bring what you really need. Focus on essentials and bring only a few personal items to make your space feel like home.

]]>Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?
]]>The 45-year-old Chavez Rodriguez is the granddaughter of legendary organized labor icon Cesar Chavez whose parents involved her in organizing from a young age — as a 9-year-old she says she was arrested at a protest while handing out fliers in New Jersey. She received her B.S. in Latin American Studies from the University of California-Berkeley while spending the summers working for the AFL-CIO (where her mother Linda Chavez Rodriguez was an executive vice president). She also helped organize strawberry pickers in California for the United Farm Workers, where her father, Arturo Rodriguez, was the president. That long campaign culminated in success when pickers signed their first union contract in 2001.
A longtime White House aide, Chavez Rodriguez served as special assistant to the president and senior deputy director of public engagement in the Office of Public Engagement under former President Barack Obama, after working in the Department of the Interior. She later served as the California state director for then-Sen. Kamala Harris before joining Harris's short-lived presidential campaign in 2019. Chavez Rodriguez joined the Biden campaign as a senior adviser in May 2020 after months of insider recriminations about the campaign's outreach to Latinos and fears that Biden would under-perform with this critical group.
She is currently the senior adviser and assistant to the president and director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs — an executive office that serves as liaison and coordinator between the White House and state, county, local, and tribal governments. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) told The Washington Post that it's "an enormous job, incredibly complex, that she's done really well for 2½ years." The position took on additional importance and complexity as the Biden administration rolled out COVID-19 vaccines in 2021 and battled the pandemic in conjunction with state and local officials.
Chavez Rodriguez appears to be highly regarded by Democratic elites, who praise her organizational skills and ability to stay above the fray of political infighting. Cristóbal Alex, another senior adviser on Biden's 2020 run, referred to her as "an honest broker" in an interview with The New York Times. Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to former President Obama during his time in the White House, said that Chavez Rodriguez has "an ego-less quality, which is, let's say, unusual oftentimes in high levels." In an interview with Yahoo News, former White House chief of staff Ron Klain and senior Biden adviser said that "She's great as a leader, and she's great as a manager." An unnamed Harris campaign staffer said that Chavez Rodriguez is "unflappable and constantly focused on the task at hand." A search for negative appraisals of Chavez Rodriguez's skills would be in vain.
President Biden, who has kept a bust of Cesar Chavez on his desk throughout his presidency, will need a keen strategist heading the campaign. Assuming he secures the Democratic nomination, he will be by far the oldest person ever to secure a major-party nomination, and he will battle either former President Donald Trump or another Republican nominee in an election that is perceived to have enormous stakes for the future of American democracy. As campaign manager, Chavez Rodriguez will be tasked with coordinating the various aspects of a presidential campaign, including fundraising, strategy, media relations, and staffing.

One thing we’ve all learned over the past year is that, to be as productive as possible when working at home, you really need to create a unique home office. Having an area that defines where you work and separates it from where you live is vital to living and working productively at home.
Your home office be a second space with a door you can close or just a spot in your home where you can sit down, answer your e-mails, take a Zoom call, and stay organized every day. If you want to create a home office that’s unique, something that will be your favourite room in the entire house, here’s how to set up the best home office for you.
There are a few must-haves when creating a home office. Here are a few essential items you’ll need to get set up.
In any home office, the desk is the best place to start. I really believe that a desk will dictate the style and flow of your home office, and there are different types of desks to suit every style. You’ll want to choose one you like the look of, but something that works in your room, too.
There are so many different desks it’s going to be hard to choose just one. There are L-shaped desks that give you more than enough workspace for your computer, printer, and paperwork and smaller desks that double as a gaming desk when you’re not working. One of the latest trends in home office desks is standing desks. They can raise if you’d like to work standing up and lower when you’d like to sit.
No matter which you choose, when you pick your desk first the rest of the room will fall together quickly.
Having a good desk chair actually increases productivity. You’ll be spending a lot of time in your office chair, so it should be one of the most comfortable chairs you own. When you work at home and you have a hard office chair, it’s all too tempting to move over to your couch. Couches lead to naps, and naps, however nice, can seriously slow you down work-wise.
There are as many different types of desk chairs as there are desks. Maybe you’ll choose an executive leather chair or a bold velvet chair. Both options are comfortable and stylish. There are also mesh office chairs that are both breathable and comfortable. Whichever you choose you’ll want to make sure it’s something you can sit in for a few hours at a time.
If you find your back or shoulders hurt after long hours in your home office, you can try an ergonomic chair. This type of chair has lumbar and neck support and can adapt to your body, movement, and posture so it keeps you comfortable and supported during the day.
Bookcases are easily one of my favourite pieces of furniture, and they are an essential piece of office equipment. They control clutter because they hold all your favourite collectibles, books, and other things you like to see during the day. They are also the perfect backdrop for Zoom calls, and they are a great place to put a lamp or two for extra ambiance.
If you have space I’d recommend adding several bookcases. You could even do an entire wall and have your bookcases styled so they look built-in. If you have a small room you may want to opt for open bookcases with no back panelling, just to create a more open look.
While the latest styles favour open-shelf bookcases, there is a lot to be said for having a few bookcases or wood cabinets with doors. You can pack up your clutter at the end of the day and hide it behind closed doors so everything is neat and tidy when you walk in the next day. Some bookcases can mount on the wall above your desk to give you easy access or you can have a few different sizes and line them neatly on one wall.
For extra storage and better organization, it’s a good idea to have a mounted hutch or workspace organizer on your desk. They provide space for everything from pens to printers to paperwork, and having a clean desk helps keep your productivity up during the day.
I can’t imagine life without a filing cabinet and I believe they are a home office essential. If you look at other people’s home offices on Zoom, you’ll probably see a filing cabinet in the corner too.
They are a vital part of any work-at-home space because they keep every piece of paperwork, every receipt, and even your kid’s artwork in a neat and tidy space. They aren’t boring to look at either – the latest filing cabinets are just as stylish as your other office furniture. Some types of filing cabinets can even match your desk or bookcases, or you could choose a filing cabinet in a bold colour so it adds a splash to your home office.
Beyond a laptop and a printer, there are a few pieces of tech that have made working at home so much easier.
Webcams are a must-have if you frequently meet with coworkers on Zoom. If your laptop doesn’t have one built-in, there are several great options you can choose from. The latest webcams are available in 1080p Full HD or 4K resolution and can stream at 30 or 60fps. They have microphones built in so you don’t need to use an additional mic, and some offer features like a privacy shutter to block viewers when you’re not on a call.
You can take a look at the video creation buying guide for an idea of how to choose a great webcam.
What was life like before selfie ring lights and streaming lights? Video calls were often too dark and you were stuck with a harsh glare overhead or a sidelight that didn’t quite show your best side. A selfie ring light will hold your camera or phone if you’re making a video, and you can use the light to put the focus on you instead of the shadows in the room.
Streaming lights will attach to your computer or are adjustable so you can position them anywhere you need lighting. You can switch light modes depending on what you’re capturing, and some types of streaming lights have the software you can use to adjust your lighting and make you look your best.
You aren’t going to be able to answer your coworker’s questions if you can’t hear them, so a headset is a great addition to your home office. You can plug in and listen carefully to any video calls, and in your downtime use them to stream music to boost your concentration.
The latest headsets have retractable microphones so you can mute yourself with a touch. They are either corded or wireless and give you crystal clear audio for calls or if you’re tuning into a live video feed. If you need to block noise while working you could choose a noise-cancelling Bluetooth headset. They use either different types of noise cancelling technology to create a calm, quiet work environment for you.
You can stream your favourite music from your computer speakers, but it won’t sound as good as it would on a Bluetooth speaker. These speakers are portable, easy to carry around if you want to take them with you when you leave home, and there are quite a few different ‘concentration’ playlists you can use to help with your focus.
Streaming music can make your day feel happier and more productive, and if you need to block outside noise you can also stream nature sounds or white noise.
When you’re tired of staring at the same four walls every day, overhauling your home office feels like you threw open the windows and let the spring air in. Once you’re finished setting up the main parts of your home office, there are a few ways you can make it more inviting.
You can make your home office your own unique space by adding different types of home decor. Before you shop you’ll want to create a mood board or save some ideas for a theme or colour scheme. Once you know what you like you can shop for different items to complement your space. Some people like to add a comfortable chair in a corner with a few throw pillows. You could also liven up a home office by adding wall art, blinds or curtains to block outside light, and little touches like lamps, plants, or collectibles.
An aromatherapy device can work at different timed intervals, so you can set it to turn on before you head into your home office in the morning and you’ll be greeted by a revitalizing scent. Scents like citrus can help you wake up, while a burst of lavender can signal it’s time to close up for the day.
You can mix and match different essential oils to create new and interesting scents. You can feel your mood changing when you add new oils to your aromatherapy device. Some will help you wind down after a stressful day while others will give you a boost when you feel tired.
You don’t want your home office to be a door you dread opening every day, so it helps if you set timers and boundaries for your day. You can use a smart display and voice assistant to alert you when it’s time to take a break or use it to do a guided 5-minute deep breathing exercise.
The latest smart displays stream videos from sites like Netflix or Disney+ and some have built-in cameras you can use to video chat with friends.
You should love your home office and be productive when you’re spending time there. There has never been a better time to refresh your entire home office to make it a more efficient space. ]]>Outdoor living, which combines both cooking/grilling and entertaining, has become increasingly important for many people who want their exterior spaces to perform like those indoors. An outdoor space is no longer just a grill and a couple of patio chairs. These days, it’s built-in appliances – such as grills with ventilation hoods, refrigerators and ice makers – being joined by sinks, pantries and even islands. Televisions and expansive lounging areas with fireplaces encourage guests to hang out outside with the chef.
This month, KBDN asked designers to share outdoor kitchen projects that bring the inside out.
COVID-19 has certainly changed much about people’s lives, including how they feel about their interior – as well as exterior – spaces.
“It’s no secret that the pandemic inspired folks to create outdoor living spaces for their families as a way to gather safely,” says Jill Jarrett, CMKBD/CAPS/co-owner of Jarrett Design in Emmaus, PA. “Increased awareness around the health benefits of being outdoors has also spurred interest in outdoor kitchens.”
For those who are making an investment outside, Jarrett has seen basic outdoor grilling areas with metal cabinets and grills set into masonry being upstaged by large outdoor kitchens with custom cabinetry and a plethora of outdoor-rated materials, inspired in part by Instagram and other social media platforms that highlight beautiful outdoor kitchens.
Case in point is this dream space that she and Jesse Jarrett, CKBD/co-owner, designed in collaboration with Awosting Construction.
The new-construction home overlooks a lake and mountains and sits within a century-old community of summer cottages with white clapboard siding, green trim and green roofs. Her clients sought to maintain that vibe in their outdoor kitchen.
“Our clients wanted a gorgeous and functional outdoor kitchen that would serve as a place to gather and entertain,” she says. “It also had to reflect the style of their home and feel like an extension of their indoor living spaces. A hearty appliance line-up was high on their wish list, too.”
With regard to appliances, they included an Evo flattop grill, 48″ Caliber Appliances grill, Perlick refrigerator/freezer drawers and The Galley workstation and tap. A critter-proof stainless steel pantry built into the lower bar area keeps food and supplies protected. All are set within NatureKast gray teak cabinetry trimmed with stainless steel and topped with Cosentino’s Dekton sintered stone, both of which were chosen for their ability to withstand the elements. Added winter protection, given the home’s northern climate, is provided by custom boat covers.
“The cabinetry offers a great aesthetic and abundant options for interior accessories,” she explains, noting the inclusion of roll-out trays, a pull-out cooking utensil organizer, a pull-out spice cabinet, a tray/cutting board cabinet, a double trash cabinet and a special cabinet that neatly organizes The Galley sink accessories. “And the countertops were chosen for their ability to stand up to the elements. Plus, the material’s white and gray colors work well with the home’s exterior.”
Because of the extensive appliance list, Jarrett focused on creating a layout that was functional for the cook, yet allowed for adequate seating and interaction with guests. Its G-shaped configuration was inspired by the curved deck foundation, where abundant seating at a raised bar fittingly follows the arc and comfortably seats six. The round shape of the flattop grill also speaks to the curved deck, thus its inclusion on the seating side. The focal-point appliance even has its own curved-front cabinet/countertop where the homeowners can tuck away the lid when the grill is in use.
“I love including appliances like the Evo,” says Jarrett. “It’s great for a morning breakfast and it provides an easy way for making a meal while getting guests involved.”
As a complement, the traditional grill is situated on the adjacent perimeter. Its retractable top allows for an unobstructed view while cooking.
“Our clients wanted the cooking appliances to face the lake,” she indicates.
Positioning the refrigerator and freezer drawers near the entrance of the kitchen allows for easy access to beverages without getting in the way of the chef, and locating the sink against the wall of the house provides some winter protection for the plumbing.
Tall stainless steel posts that match the deck railing support a large sail that provides shade on sunny days. Custom fabricated, they also include lighting that sets the mood at night.
“They didn’t want a permanent structure, which would make it dark inside the house,” she explains.
Like Jill Jarrett, Lisa Sherry has seen more clients gravitate toward outdoor living, especially in the past several years.
“We’re definitely doing more outdoor kitchens…that are also more luxurious,” says the principal designer of Lisa Sherry Interieurs in Charlotte, NC. “That trend started before the pandemic, but it became a bigger push during the ‘stay at home era’ where everyone wanted more space to spread out. Clients felt that if they couldn’t travel to a resort, they wanted to make their homes a resort. Having more cooking and entertaining capabilities outside definitely seems to be the trend.”
Those exterior spaces are also shifting toward a luxurious contemporary and streamlined aesthetic with a more monochromatic color palette, similar to what Sherry has seen happening inside the home.
“We used to see a lot of stone and masonry with a more traditional look,” she says, noting a current preference for materials such as concrete and ‘clean’ woods. “Outdoor kitchens used to look a lot more ‘outdoor.’ But now, in terms of actual design, there are so many similarities to what we’re doing inside, where, in general, we’re seeing a more cleaned-up look that is a little more linear. And manufacturers are also providing materials with a more modern aesthetic that give us the durability needed for outdoors. I’m less traditional and more modern in my design style, so I love it.”
Those trends are evident in two recent outdoor spaces that, although visually at opposite ends of the color spectrum, both showcase contemporary design.
“Both of these clients, like most, are looking to move from entertaining inside to entertaining outside…with easy access,” she explains. “Typically, my clients who are putting in outdoor kitchens also have a pool and an expansive outside area that is perfect for entertaining, so they want to be able to do so easily.”
In one case, the outdoor living space is easily accessible via sliding doors from the open-concept floor plan interior of the new-construction home completed in collaboration with Joyce Building Co. (builder) and Cluck Design (architect). It includes a cooking/grilling area, a sofa and chair for lounging and a custom dining table with unique live-edge legs and seating for plenty of guests, all protected beneath a roof. Cypress wood on the walls and ceiling combine with a steel backsplash and concrete countertop to create an earthy and moody vibe, which juxtaposes the home’s light interior.
“The darker materials used in this kitchen really make it feel special…and a bit moodier, which is great for nighttime entertaining,” Sherry relates. “And, it’s almost all enclosed, with the exception of the two sides that are screened.”
A Hestan natural gas grill and Perlick refrigerator make entertaining easy, while a sink makes for easy cleanup.
“A great grill and refrigerator are two must-have elements,” she indicates. “I also like to include a trash pull-out and plenty of counter space. I’m also seeing people include warming drawers, pizza ovens and even dishwashers.”
Another recent outdoor kitchen project, designed in collaboration with Thompson Custom Building Group, is in an open area between the house and a covered lounging area. Light and bright were considerations for this client, who didn’t want to lose light inside the home by covering the outdoor kitchen.
“This kitchen is smaller and doesn’t necessarily have a lot of bells and whistles,” she relates, “but it’s still conducive to entertaining.”
Since it is uncovered, Sherry made sure to include materials and appliances that were intended for outdoor use, including the built-in Delta Heat 32″ grill with rotisserie, Big Green Egg kamado grill and bluestone countertop and floor.
Southern California is conducive to outdoor living, where open-air spaces are often a top priority for homeowners, including these clients who wanted to transform an unkempt and neglected backyard into a clean, contemporary oasis where they could entertain friends and hang out with family.
“Their backyard was overgrown with vines that covered everything, and the curvy barbecue area just didn’t match their style,” recalls Nicole Valentine, senior designer, JRP Design & Remodel in Westlake Village, CA. “We cleaned it up, reconfigured the layout and incorporated contemporary design elements to give them the perfect blend of beauty, form and function. Now the space is open and inviting with an amazing barbecue and lounge area to complement the pool, which is visible from anywhere in the yard.”
A focal-point media center sits at the heart of the grilling/entertaining area where a large TV is positioned above a built-in fireplace.
“Being able to watch sporting events with friends was a big concern for the husband,” the designer recalls.
To each side of the television, Valentine and the design/construction team incorporated the outdoor kitchen essentials. One side relates to cooking, such as the 42″ Lynx grill and PCM components that include a trash pullout, double doors that conceal storage and a trio of stainless steel drawers, the latter of which also features a place for paper towels as well as spatulas and other cooking utensils.
“I always encourage clients to consider a trash pullout and a paper towel holder,” she advises. “Cooking outside is messy, so it’s great to have a place to drop your trash. And, if you spill something, it’s nice to have paper towels handy for cleanup.”
A Lynx undercounter refrigerator and a PCM pantry are positioned on the opposite side of the television.
“The barbecue area is a bit of a walk from the interior kitchen, so it has to function on its own,” Valentine relates. “The pantry is great for storing glassware and plates so my clients don’t have to run back into the kitchen. We included the refrigerator close to the pool so guests can easily grab a drink without being in the way of the cook.”
Selecting materials that could withstand the elements was paramount as well, thus the inclusion of a Cosentino Dekton countertop and ipe cabinetry, which adds a richness and warmth that juxtaposes the concrete.
“We used Dekton in this project. It has been available for a while, but there are some new countertop materials becoming available that are blowing our minds,” she relates. “For example, quartz companies that make indoor countertops are now coming out with collections that can be used outdoors.”
Given its typically sunny climate, providing shade was an important consideration, too, which was accomplished via a pergola.
“The shade structure plays with the light and casts shadows, which was intentional to reinforce the linear elements in the backyard,” notes the designer, adding that it is foiled by the curvy, free-form pool.
“The curves of the pool create contrast,” she continues. “I believe that good design should also include what I call a ‘foil.’ The backyard is a grid with a lot of straight lines, so having one element that is more curvy helps to break things up.”
Valentine also appreciates the contribution made by the bright teal tile that was used to resurface the pool.
“Designing outdoor spaces requires a different way of thinking,” she explains. “When you’re outside, you don’t usually have a ceiling or walls that enclose you. There’s also direct sunlight so we have to think about lighting differently, which gave us the ability to play with the shadows from the pergola. There’s also a different ruleset for materials. For example, the pool tile…it’s an amazing 1″x1″ bright teal tile. I’d never use it inside a house, but it works perfectly for the pool!”
When this outdoor kitchen was posted to its community’s Facebook group, it went viral.
“The entire next day I sat at my desk answering calls,” says Marissa Moore, principal designer/Allied ASID, Interior Style by Marissa Moore in Aldie, VA, who designed the space in collaboration with Maruca Design Build.
Moore credits much of its popularity to its uniqueness. Outdoor living and entertaining are important to homeowners in this community, which is located in Loudoun County where large renovation/construction budgets support large homes with large yards. This client was no different in that respect, however, she did want her outdoor space to be unlike any others in the neighborhood.
“There are a lot of outdoor spaces here, but everyone tends to do the same thing,” she relates. “It’s a very cookie-cutter neighborhood. Everyone’s house is the same. But this outdoor entertaining area is completely different. There isn’t anything else like it around here.”
One distinguishing characteristic that sets it apart is its size. The entire outdoor entertaining/cooking area is substantial, encompassing two levels with the kitchen and a small seating area on the upper deck. A dining area, freestanding fire pit and large living room with a built-in fireplace, TV and sofa are on the lower level, which leads to a pool. Tall ceilings accented with beams and skylights provide protection from the elements and retractable screens and glass walls add to the outdoor ambiance and provide easy access to the yard.
While it is considered an outdoor space, Moore’s client wanted it to feel like an interior space.
“She wanted it to be as cool as any interior kitchen,” she relates, adding that this request has become popular with many of her other clients as well. “People want to spend time outside and they want a luxe entertaining space that makes them feel like they are inside. They want it to be an extension of their home. They want to bring the inside outside.”
With regard to this kitchen, that translates to the inclusion of several elements that can be found in a typical indoor counterpart. For starters, the designer included an island, complete with seating, an undercounter refrigerator and plenty of storage.
“People want seating…at an island or a bar,” she relates. “Outdoor spaces are all about entertaining, so when the chef is at the grill, guests can interact.”
For an added ‘wow’ factor, the granite countertop falls vertically with waterfall edge details on each end. Since this kitchen must perform independently from the interior kitchen, the designer also included a sink for easy cleanup.
Around the perimeter she included a second undercounter refrigerator along with a 60″ Lynx grill and Big Green Egg kamado grill, both equipped with a ventilation hood.
“Everyone, including this client, wants a bigger built-in grill, and if the space is enclosed, it needs a ventilation hood,” she relates.
Moore repeated the granite countertop around the perimeter and complemented it with a porcelain tile backsplash, giving it an interior vibe with a contemporary design style. A television is mounted on the wall within easy viewing of guests and the cook.
“Everyone wants a TV that they can see from the kitchen area!” she indicates.

I am someone who things it can be easier to keep your pens and pencils on your desktop, rather than in a drawer.
So, the Deflecto Stackable Organizer Cross Divider is the best option for keeping your desk tidy while storing everything from pens, pencils, and scissors on your desktop!
When it comes to organizing office supplies, it can be easier to keep them on your desktop if you use them frequently.
Let’s say you use Post-It notes daily. Then keeping them out on your desk would benefit you in your productivity. You wouldn’t be spending as much time searching for the Post-It notes in a drawer.
To keep your work-from-home desk organization in tact, I recommend using drawer organizers on your desktop.
Deflecto has one-drawer organizers that are perfect for taller items you want to keep in a drawer like a label maker.
The two-drawer organizer is perfect for Post-It notes, extra supplies like staples or tape, or notecards.
And the four-drawer organizer is great for smaller items like paper clips and Washi tape.
If you are like me, you have multiple notebooks to keep yourself organized while working. So to keep those notebooks organized, I use the Deflecto Large Open Cube Organizer.
You can either have this organizer lay the long way to stack the notebooks on top of each other. Or you can stand the organizer up and have the notebooks stand up inside the organizer.

]]>Remember this office project I shared last week?
You can see the before and after here.
When I shared the makeover I got asked tons of questions (which you know I am all about) and so many of you asked how I organized it.
What did the drawers look like?
What was behind the cabinets?
How did I store office supplies?
Good thing there’s an unlimited question policy around here.
And good thing I have the answers.
So today let me show you the spaces in this office and how they function and how they are organized.
Are you ready to talk a little office organization?
Let’s GO.
Both walls of the office are lined with these bookcases from IKEA. Before I open the doors and show you inside, I wanted to answer a few of the questions I was asked about the bookcases:
And when you open the bookcases?
Here’s how I have the inside of them organized.
Here are the storage baskets that I ordered for the space.
I LOVE THEM so much. I ordered two sets of them (and I may order one more set of them when I fill the two sets up).
They come in different colors and have lids and measure 10.4 x 7.3 x 5.1 inches and there are little holes in the side to let the contents breathe and they are affordable and there is a 10% off coupon right now.
I also used this stand-up file folder organizer for my files.
To each of the bins, I added these clip-on gold labels.
They just slid over the side of the bins and I added labels to the front. I was going to print off fonts on clear labels but I didn’t have time.
Here are some of the things I’m storing in the bins:
You can see the clip-on labels here.
On my dad’s desk (which I did not paint and I’m so happy you all convinced me not to) I have this laptop stand.
It is so sturdy and puts your computer at the perfect height for ZOOM calls. I used to prop up my computer on books before I found this stand.
When you aren’t using it—the stand folds flat and fits perfectly in a computer bag.
You can see the foldable laptop stand here.
Inside the drawers of the desk?
I have these plastic desk organizers that fit perfectly in the drawers.
I got these organizers at IKEA, but you could also use these drawer organizers that I used to organize my kitchen drawers.
These gold scissors are part of a nine-piece office set that I ordered.
Here’s the stapler that’s part of the set.
It also includes a beautiful tape dispenser, a staple remover, a ruler, a pencil holder, a stapler and tons more.
You can see the entire nine-piece set here.
To hold office supplies like binder clips and paper clips and push pins, I found this set of acrylic apothecary jars with gold lids.
Then I decorated the bookcases with them.
You can see the acrylic apothecary jars here.
On this side of the office, I have a charger station set up.
I love this retractable charger. It retracts on both sides so the charging station always looks neat. There are three different types of charges on the end, so no matter what type of device you are charging, there’s always a place to charge everything.
You can see the retractable charger here.
I also love this four-plug charger with USB ports.
Just a couple of other things that I’ve been using in the office lately.
This pull-up cord organizer sticks onto your computer charger to organize the cord.
You can see the cord organizer here.
I also have this phone stand that holds my iPad or phone to watch movies or Facetime.
You can see phone stand here.
This portable charger goes in my laptop and charges both types of phones or devices. You plug it in the wall and then it has a charge anytime you need it on the go.
You can see the charger here.
I am still organizing and moving things around and figuring out how to use the office spaces and storage in the most effective way.
Isn’t it amazing how a new office gives you a brand-new perspective?
I was SO productive last week and I think I owe it all to the office.
Work has never looked so cute….
…or been so MUCH FUN.
